Chapter 6
When Emmeline woke up very early the next morning, she bounded out of bed and headed to the servantsâ kitchen. She put on coffee, made herself a quick breakfast, then sat down at the table with her checklist. She needed to get a handle on some of these things, figure out all the phone calls that needed to be made, who among this special group she could put work on to, and what she needed to hire someone to take on.
But, at the same time, Emmeline needed to pass off a bunch of this money stuff to Celia to take over. That girl needed to stay off her feet as it was, and now they had a wedding to arrange. Emmeline frowned, as she thought about that. If she could give a lot of that wedding planning over to Charles, it would help. But he might not want to take that on. She couldnât really blame him, since he was busy doing security stuff, which is something he excelled at, so asking him to take on a wedding was definitely not the easiest or the most natural shift.
For her, it would be fun. Itâs just she had a time frame issue, but sheâd promised to get it done, so she would. Thatâs just the way life was. As she continued to work on her list and nibbled away on her toast, others slowly came to join her. She looked up as each one walked in, smiled at them, and went back to her work.
Celia sat down beside her. âWhat are you working on?â
âLots of different lists,â she said, taking a sip of coffee. âIâm basically doing a brain dump at this point, listing things that need to be done today, people I need to phone today, and things that weâll add to our work list for the wedding to happen.â
âI kind of feel bad about that.â Celia winced. âYouâre already dealing with so much.â
âSo, Iâm dealing with a little bit more,â she said cheerfully. âItâs really not an issue.â
âI do like that, thank you very much,â she murmured. âYour attitude is very refreshing.â
Emmeline just smiled at her. âYou have a job right now, whether itâs what you ever thought you would be doing or not. Your job is to do your very best to bring those babies safely to term.â
âThat point has been brought home to me a few times now.â
âIâm sure it has,â she said, with a smile, âand you can expect more of that as you get closer.â
She nodded. âSo, have you got something for me to go work on?â Celia asked.
âI do. I figured that, after youâve had your breakfast, you could head up to your room, where weâll get you set up with a laptop. With your feet up,â she added. âDo you think I havenât noticed that your ankles are starting to swell?â
She winced. âMaybe donât pass around that detail,â Celia whispered.
âToo late,â Clary said, as she walked in. âIâll do some energy work on you today and see if we can get that to stop.
